Three drinks that won't break your intermittent fast.

Updated: Aug 31

Top Tips for making intermittent fasting easy peasy.

If you’ve just started your fasting journey, there's a chance you might have stumbled across a few challenges. Fasting can be tough, especially when you hit an energy slump or start craving something other than water. Trust me, I’ve been there!

As I mentioned in my Book Summary of Dr. Mindy Pelz’s Fast Like a Girl , fasting in sync with my hormones has allowed me to bypass many of the icky side effects I used to experience during longer fasts—namely, excessive hanger. However, there are still times when I need a little bit of a boost to get through the day without breaking my fast.

In this post, I’m sharing the three drinks (Other than water) I swear by during my fasts. I’ve blood sugar-tested myself with all of these, and they don’t break my fast. According to Dr. Mindy Pelz, if your blood sugar doesn’t spike more than 0.5 mmol/L (10 mg/dL) within 1-2 hours after consuming a drink, it likely won’t break your fast. Of course, everyone’s body responds differently, so the best way to know for sure is to test your blood sugar yourself. I use the LifeSpan blood glucose and Ketone monitoring system sugar to test mine.

That said, these three beverages are calorie-free, sugar-free, and have consistently kept my fast intact.

1. HOPR: My Go-To Fasting Beverage

HOPR is my absolute favourite drink, whether I’m fasting or not. I first discovered it when I was on my quest to reduce my alcohol intake, and it’s been a game-changer ever since. This refreshing sparkling hop water is infused with adaptogens and nootropics, making it perfect for staying calm and clear-headed.

Why I Love It:

  • Adaptogens and Nootropics: The combination of Lemon Balm (an adaptogen) and L-Theanine (a natural nootropic found in green tea) provides a calm, focused energy without the negative side effects of alcohol.

  • Flavour Variety: HOPR comes in four delicious flavours, - Mango, Passionfruit, Citra and Amarillo Hops and Citra Hops- There's always something to match your mood.

  • Fasting-Friendly: Zero calories, zero sugar, and it won’t spike your blood sugar.

Whether you’re winding down after a long day or powering through an afternoon slump, HOPR has become my No.1 fasting sidekick.

2. LMNT: Essential Electrolytes Without the Sugar

Staying hydrated during a fast is crucial, and LMNT has become my go-to for replenishing vital minerals. This high-quality electrolyte mix contains the perfect ratios of sodium, potassium, and magnesium—without any of the sugar or artificial ingredients found in most over-the-counter electrolyte supplements.

Why I Love It:

  • Clean Ingredients: LMNT is packed with essential minerals and zero sugar.

  • Energy Boost: Perfect for staying energised during a sauna session, workout, or when energy levels dip during a fast.

  • Flavour: My favourite is Watermelon, but there are plenty of options to choose from.

3. Coffee and Herbal Tea: Classic and Reliable

Black coffee and herbal teas are fasting staples for many, and for good reason. They can provide a much-needed energy boost without breaking your fast. However, it’s important to choose your coffee and tea wisely.

What to Look For:

  • Quality: Opt for organic coffee whenever possible to reduce your exposure to pesticides and chemicals. My favourite is Yahava Pacifica, which you can find here.

  • Herbal Teas: Not all herbal teas are created equal. Avoid brands that use microplastic-containing teabags or sweeten their teas with dried fruits or sugar. I swear by Pukka’s Three Ginger and Feel Good flavours. They’re certified organic and widely available in most Australian supermarkets, or you can order them from their website here.

My Secret Weapon for beating hunger cravings.

Another drink I’ve recently added to my fasting toolbox is Modere Curb—and honestly, it’s a game-changer when it comes to keeping cravings at bay. This clever little supplement is designed to help you feel fuller for longer by supporting your body's natural hunger signals. It works by promoting healthy levels of GLP-1, a hormone that tells your brain, “Hey, we’re full!” So instead of white-knuckling your way through a fast, Curb helps take the edge off those mid-morning or late-night cravings.

What I also love is that it’s packed with prebiotic fibre and citrus-based polyphenols that nourish your gut while supporting a healthy metabolism. The fibre in Curb expands in your stomach, helping you feel satisfied longer, and it even feeds those beneficial gut bugs we all want more of. It’s a simple way to support both your fasting window and your overall gut health at the same time. I mix it up in the morning or when i'm at work and feeling a little snacky, it genuinely helps me stay on track without feeling deprived.

Final Thoughts

Fasting doesn’t have to mean deprivation. With the right beverages, you can stay energised, clear-headed, and on track with your fasting goals. Remember, the key is to listen to your body and choose drinks that support your fasting journey without breaking it. Whether you’re sipping on a sparkling HOPR, replenishing with LMNT, or enjoying a comforting cup of herbal tea, these options are sure to keep you going strong.
